This is a chapter of a graphic novel I am working on. It is about a trip I did with my family when I was 7 years old around South America. Part of my End Master’s Work from the Master in Lecture, Books and Children and Young Adults lecturers, from Universidad de Zaragoza in Spain.
This is a personal project, a picture book, that was inspired in a folklore legend from my city, Quito. It explains the construction of a church that was made because of a deal from a man, called Cantuña, and the devil. Cantuña was very lazy, so he had to sell his soul to the devil and ask him to finish the church before sunrise. This legend is very popular amongst school plays, and it has a mix of reality and fantasy.

For the portrait of Dolores Cacuango and Tránsito Amaguaña, I worked with gouache and color pencil. After doing research, I tried to represent them as an important element for the Ecuadorian indigenous people, using food, music and fire as part of a pacha mama celebration. While the quinoa flowers relate to a phrase from Dolores Cacuango, indicating that her people are like quinoa flowers, there are a lot of them in the highlands, in order to reinforce their strength as a united community. Tránsito and Dolores played a fundamental role in Ecuadorian history as an impact for human rights and equity for indigenous people and developed the first bilingual schools in the country.

For Helena Gualinga’s portrait, it was a mix of traditional and digital media. The effect was done by layers, as it was done like screen printing, but instead of doing all the manual process, the layers were scanned and put together on Photoshop.

"Parade" is a Non-Fiction book inspired in different Ecuadorian folkloric parades as a result of a mix of cultures and traditions.
In this video I explain how I came out with the idea and the process of the Parade, a picture book I did for my dissertation in the MA in Children's Book Illustration. I actually did this video for an illustration competition, but I thought it might be useful for anyone who wants to develop a new book project.
